CSA Week 15

This is a little late, because Nicole had a migraine the night of the pickup, and Carl grabbed the veggies. We took a picture, but staring at screens is hard with light sensitivity, so Nicole hadn’t managed to get the photo of her phone. Well, with no more waiting, Here’s week 15:

Bento Lunch On A Chilly Thursday

The fun thing about Nicole having the appetite of a small child is the chance to use fun lunch ware. This morning’s Laptop Lunchbox is filled with yummy goodies.

Deconstructed Sausage and Kale “Soup”

So Thursday was a freak 95* day here in eastern Massachusetts, after it being in the low 60s on Wednesday. We had kale that needed eating, and Nicole had a craving for sausage and kale, but it was not soup weather. So we took the ingredients that would make up the soup, and had sausage and kale fry-up instead. Nicole also chopped up the smoked mozzerella, some of the heirloom tomatoes coming out of our ears, and tossed them with balsamic. It was delicious. Add in some sauteed green beans, and we had a fantastic meal.

Mixed Salad Greens, Harukai Turnips, Callaloo, Green Beans, Itty Bitty Heirloom Tomatoes, red peppers, apples, nectarines,  and concord grapes.

 

Just So You Know…

We failed to take a photo, but the yellow watermelon from last week’s share was delicious when it took a bath with Mr. Vodka at a Labor Day Party. Our friends James and Clark helped us out, James the EMT by carving a threaded hole for the bottle, and Clark by carving out a place for the water to drain when we realized the vodka wasn’t moving.

CSA: Week 12

One of the cool things about being part of a coop rather than a straight CSA is that the members staff the depot on pickup day. Everyone is asked to do 2 hours of volunteer work a season, whether that is staffing the depot, writing for the newsletter, or other volunteer jobs that come up. Nicole worked her second shift at the depot today, and Carl came over to help clean up and take down the ez-ups.

A bonus for those volunteers who stay until the end is that often, there is some leftovers, from people who did not take items, people who didn’t pick up their shares, or the food bank, who take many of the leftover veggies, but not all.

It is Strange the Things We Remember

There are times that I cannot remember conversations I had last week, but certain childhood memories are indelibly encoded into my neurons.

I remember that the cookbook was geared for kids, but not that it was called. The recipe was for “Happle Bagel Sandwiches”

The gyst was to take a bagel half, lay down a slice of apple, put a slice of American cheese on top and sprinkle cinnamon. Then broil it, with parental supervision, until the cheese had achieved melts goodness. I remember it being delicious.

So I was being nostalgic the other day, but given that I can’t do the bagel anymore, I simplified and just laid the cheese on the csa apples. I swapped out smoked salt for cinnamon because I am way more of a savory girl these days, and I am happy to tell you that it was still delicious.
